Fiberglass Pool Failure Investigation

Project #12- Loadcase Forensic Engineering

Project Overview

A forensic structural investigation was performed to determine the cause of a major structural failure of a residential fiberglass swimming pool. The objective was to document the observed damage, evaluate the condition of the pool structure, identify the probable failure mechanism, and provide engineering opinions regarding the cause of the structural failure.

The pool had experienced sudden and extensive structural distress, including significant wall deformation, cracking, and rupture of the fiberglass shell. The severity of the damage raised concerns regarding the structural integrity of the pool and the feasibility of repair.

Engineering Challenge

Fiberglass swimming pools rely on the interaction between the pool shell, surrounding backfill, groundwater conditions, and the internal water pressure provided by the pool itself. A failure of any part of this system can result in excessive structural stresses that exceed the capacity of the fiberglass shell.

Determining the cause of failure requires a systematic engineering investigation to distinguish between manufacturing defects, installation deficiencies, ground movement, hydrostatic pressure, drainage issues, or other contributing factors.

Project #14- Loadcase Forensic Engineering

Engineering Investigation

The forensic investigation included:

  • Detailed visual inspection of the failed pool structure.
  • Documentation and mapping of structural damage.
  • Assessment of wall deformation, cracking, and fracture patterns.
  • Evaluation of the surrounding site conditions.
  • Review of the interaction between the fiberglass shell, backfill, and supporting soils.
  • Assessment of probable failure mechanisms based on the observed evidence.
  • Development of engineering opinions regarding the cause of failure and appropriate next steps.

Outcome

The investigation documented extensive structural failure of the fiberglass shell, including significant deformation and fracture of the pool structure. Based on the observed damage patterns and site conditions, engineering opinions were provided regarding the probable failure mechanism and the factors that contributed to the structural distress.

The findings assisted in understanding the sequence of failure and provided a technical basis for evaluating repair options, replacement, and any subsequent discussions between the involved parties.

Why Investigate a Failed Fiberglass Pool?

Although fiberglass pools are designed to provide many years of reliable service, structural failures can occur when the pool shell is subjected to loading conditions beyond those anticipated in the original design. A forensic engineering investigation helps determine the probable cause of failure by evaluating the structural evidence rather than relying on assumptions.

Understanding how and why the failure occurred is essential for determining the appropriate corrective action and reducing the risk of similar failures in the future.
