A forensic structural assessment was performed following an industrial deflagration event to evaluate the condition of the existing roof structure and determine the extent of structural damage. The objective of the investigation was to assess the structural framing, identify any damage resulting from the incident, and provide engineering recommendations regarding repair and continued service.
The roof structure consisted primarily of open web steel joists supporting a steel roof deck. Following the event, concerns were raised regarding possible permanent deformation, overstressing of structural members, and the overall integrity of the roof system.
Engineering Challenge
Unlike conventional gravity loads, a deflagration produces a rapid pressure wave that can subject structural members to short-duration forces they were not originally designed to resist. Even when visible damage appears limited, localized yielding, distortion, or hidden structural damage may exist.
A detailed engineering assessment was therefore required to distinguish cosmetic damage from structural damage and determine whether the roof framing remained suitable for continued service.
